  1. Steve, To be honest, I've been having some medical issues, so I have been doing a lot of research.....that is where much of my time has been..............so, I didn't know about the meeting......I haven't taken a very active roll in investing in the last year........I haven't been to the bogle site...........as you know I hold a diversified portfolio, mainly of low cost index funds, and it really doesn't take much to manage this.....whereas if I invested in individual stocks or managed funds I would have to watch a lot closer....for the managed funds I would have to see if there are any management changes, or changes in the direction that the fund takes as far as sector, corporate size, aggressiveness, etc. etc. , and for individual stocks I would have to be careful of individual stock risk, etc. Ira
  2. Hi AP, I hope everything is well with you............by the way it's Oy Vey..............unless you are singing Hernando's Hideaway, then it's O-le! Cheers, Ira
  3. Steve,..........I agree with you...........it's really important to keep our brains active as we age.......in my case I've been playing the ukulele for the last 4 and half years.......now, I spend a lot of my time entertaining and teaching at hospitals, senior centers, nursing homes , etc...........I get a lot back from volunteering....in fact, it has become a very large part of my life.......Ira
  4. Thanks Steve........it sounds like you are doing well........celebrating life.........Ira
  5. I wonder how the various American funds compare with say the wilshire 5000 over various time periods now
  6. Steve, ............Congradulations.......what a great accomplishment..........if you want to start a second career, there are brand new oportunities at , at NOrthwest...........just don't bring your laptop and log onto 403bwise while you are flying. Ira
  7. Hi............you can buy bonds directly, and not pay an annual fee, and this is a good idea if you have enough money and knowledge to buy a diversified portfolio, and the time to manage the portfolio of bonds, however bonds funds provide diversification among bonds, individual bond risk is nulified. As Steve said cost is really key in buying bond funds. When measuring success of bond funds between different mutual fund companies, you will see that the fund companies that have the lowest expense ratios provide more profit for the investor, than those fund companies that charge more. Ira Hi all..........I'm still alive and well.
  8. Hi Tony............coulda , shoulda, woulda............don't beat yourself........its past.........time to move on. I, and everybody I know, those who say they know, those who are exceptionally educated, have high positions, lots of money, etc, etc are not able to forcast the future in the market .....that's why you and I are indexers....be strong......it will get easier and easier to think this way.
  9. Welcome to index land...............I think that if switched enough money Vanguard will give a free financial analyses of you portfolio...........Ira
  10. Tony , completely agree with you and Steve. Many forieign companies have plants in the US. where they are successfully making cars that consumers are interested in buying. These guys are like the three stooges coming in private jets, with tin cups. I heard that a one way ride on one of these jets is 20K, roundtrip 40k times three. Tony when was the last time that you flew a private jet to school? Basically we watch our pennies, and think twice about spending an extra 10 bucks on a dinner, so in a very polite way I say to these guys F U C K Y OU Anyway , under bankrupcy, these companies can streamline in an effecient manner to survive. Also if we give them a handout, howmony other industries will be on line for a handout.
  11. Steve, ..........Because of John Bogle, many of us are not financially little guys or gals anymore. John Bogle also talked a lot about diversification. As we know that car industry is looking for the American public to bail them out. The Japanese and other countries have been making inroads on the gm, ford, and crysler for decades. Whey didn't they diversifiy into other industries when they were flush?
  12. ONe of USAA funds is the S& P 500. The expense ratio is 0.19 for this no load fund. How does TIAAcref and CALstrs compare with this fund? I did not look at any other current funds for USAA. http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/parts...mp;Symbol=USSPX
  13. Please excuse my ignorance, Is there a .95 percent wrap around for STRS?
  14. Thank you....for the well written answer.
  15. So the only venders that can be recommended for investing in the 403b are tiaacref and usaa insurance company, and fidelity if the hold harmless agreement is signed.
