Variable Annuity Fee Information Now Available

Recommended Posts

It's often difficult to unearth variable annuity fees and surrender charge information. Thankfully, the New York Times makes this data available each quarter. Variable annuity fee, surrender charge, and performance information for the second quarter (April 1 to June 30) is now available.

Data includes:

subaccount information

total expenses

1-year return

3-year return

5-year return

surrender charge information

It's interesting to note that according to the New York Times, most variable annuities charge more than 2 percent in fees and impose surrender charges lasting 7 years. It's also interesting to note that TIAA-CREF charges NO surrender penalties, and that the highest expense ration it charges is 0.42 percent.

See Part 2 of the Money & Business section (Sunday, July 6, 2003) for details.

Similar data on mutual funds is also included.
